Bahareh Kalantar was born in Isfahan, Iran, in 1987. She received the B.S. degree in natural resources engineering—forestry from the University of Shahrekord, Shahrekord, Iran, in 2010, and the M.S. degree in remote sensing and GIS with a GPA of 4/4 in 2015 from Universiti Putra Malaysia, Selangor, Malaysia, where she is currently a Ph.D. degree in remote sensing. My name is Dr. Daniel Fernandez. I have a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a masters and Ph.D. in nanoscience and nanotechnology. I have a strong interest in plants and hydroponic crops. When I started my degree I became fascinated by the fact that plants could be grown without soil with the mere use of synthetic chemicals and that I could perfectly control the concentration and nature of all the nutrients I gave to my plants.  Perhaps the most incredible thing about hydroponics is not only that you can imitate the plant's natural environment but that you can improve it to obtain higher yields, better-tasting crops, less water use and less run-off pollution. I honestly think that hydroponics is the true solution to world hunger and that the massive use of cheap hydroponic passive systems in third world countries -especially in those without a lot of water or arable soil - will mark the start of a new era for the world's starving population.

My blog (http://scienceinhydroponics.com) attempts to educate people about hydroponics and the many scientific aspects of this type of plant culture. Through my posts, I attempt to share my knowledge about hydroponics and the way plants work as well as how to prepare your own solutions, additives and growing systems for your hydroponic crops. As a chemist, I have acquired an in-depth understanding of how things work within a hydroponic crop and I will do my best to share this knowledge with as many people as possible.

Desa Ahmad was awarded with MARA Scholarship in 1973 to further his studies in England. He started his career as a lecturer at Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 1978 after graduating with B. Sc degree with honours in Agricultural Engineering from University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England. Later he obtained M. Sc and Ph. D in the same discipline from Cranfield University, England in 1980 and 1990 respectively.

He teaches various courses related to Agricultural Engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has supervised and co-supervised more 100 undergraduate and 33 postgraduate students including 21 international students. In 1993 he was promoted to Associate Professor and secured a full professorship in 2002.

His specialty consists of Palm oil, Paddy, Cocoa, Sweet potato, Groundnut Mechanisation and Tillage of Wet Soil. He has been involved with at least 10 consultancy and design projects which include the setting up of 10 Farm Mechanisation Centres funded by Asian Development Bank and the design of Agricultural Machinery for plantation crops. His current research interests are mainly on Mechanisation of Sweet potato production, development of a paddy seeding machine for underdeveloped countries and controlled environment. He has also won numerous international and national awards for his significant contribution and research excellence in his area of expertise. He was bestowed the Royal Award Darjah Paduka Cura Si Manja Kini (P.C.M) by the Sultan of Perak on 6th May, 2008.

With more than 30 years of experience, Professor Desa Ahmad has over 200 publications which include 8 books, 3 theses and 10 Consultancy Reports funded by Asian Development Bank. He has also authored and co-authored at least 90 peer-reviewed publications in journals and proceedings published internationally and nationally such as Journal of Terramechanics, American Journal of Applied Science, International Journal of Heavy Vehicle Systems, American Journal of Applied Sciences, Soil and Tillage, International Agricultural Engineering Journal, Agricultural Mechanisation in Asia, Africa and Latin America (AMA, Japan), Journal of Oil Palm Research and PERTANIKA Journal of Science and Technology (JST). About 62 technical papers were presented at various international and national conferences, workshops and seminars in Vietnam, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Europe and Australia.

Moreover, he is a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and registered as a Professional Engineer in Agricultural Engineering with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia. He is also a member of various professional organisations namely Association of Asian Agricultural Engineers, Malaysian Society of Agricultural Engineers, American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, Malaysian Society of Soil Science. He is a regular reviewer for articles to be published in MARDI, MPOB, Academy of Science and CIGR journals of research. Currently he is one of the editors for Malaysian Journal of Soil Science and PERTANIKA Journal of Science and Technology.

Alireza (Ali) Pourreza is a new UC Cooperative Extension assistant advisor at UC ANR Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center, agricultural engineering. His research and extension area includes spray technology, precision agriculture, automation and robotic control, sensor design, geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing, computer vision, spectroscopy, machine learning, and big data. He completed his graduate studies at the University of Florida and obtained his Ph.D. degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering under the advisement of Wonsuk “Daniel” Lee, professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Florida. Pourreza also received an interdisciplinary certificate in GIS and Remote Sensing. Ali holds a master's degree in Mechanics of Agricultural Machinery and a bachelor's degree in Farm Machinery Engineering.

Pourreza's doctoral dissertation was focused on interdisciplinary research in citrus diseases detection using computer vision, and machine learning. He developed two real-time, vision-based sensors for citrus Huanglongbing (HLB) disease detection for laboratory and field experiments. He also developed an autonomous field inspector robot and a vision-based sensor for on-site diagnosis of citrus diseases.

My research focuses on the development and application of informational technologies to understand cropping system processes, improve management of water and nutrients for crop production, and enhance plant breeding and genetics research.  A key emphasis is the collection and processing of radiometric data and remote sensing images to map crop and soil spatial variation, including new efforts using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and applications of hyperspectral remote sensing in the visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared wavebands.  I also develop, evaluate, and apply cropping system simulation models, including the Cropping System Model (CSM) as distributed with the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) and others.  Efforts are currently focused on the development of modeling methodologies that integrate remote sensing and soil moisture data for improved cotton irrigation management. Other interest areas include crop water and nitrogen status assessment, precision agriculture, management of nitrogen fertilizer, irrigation and drainage water management, field-based plant phenomics, and development of new bioenergy crops.

Soheil RokniDeilami was born in Tehran. He graduated in master degree of Energy Engineering (Renewable Energy) in 2017 from University Putra Malaysia (UPM) Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He registered a patent in 2004. It was his first patent in Iran. His second and third patents were registered in 2006 and 2007 also in Iran. His Fourth patent was registered in Malaysia which the university supported the patent. He was sent to Germany for participating in an invention competition (IENA 2007) and got a bronze medal from there. Moreover, he went to Switzerland for participating in an invention and innovation competition and exhibition (Geneva 2008) and he received a silver medal from the competition. He started to work as a director and technician in an engineering company since 2001 until 2010. Soheil has 9 years’ experience on wiring and cabling all of the houses, buildings, factories and activities on smart houses. Furthermore, He has some awards and honors such as a special award from an Inventions competition of Poland (ISWA-2009), president award from Inventions competition of Malaysia (ITEX-2009), best researcher from Islamic Azad University in 2008, top student in Azad University Arak branch in 2007 and so on. His current research interests are in renewable energy and robotic systems

Mr. Chidiac started out in Biological Engineering with an emphasis on Biomedical applications; during this time, he was involved in various engineering projects including testing novel plastic-wood composite materials, developing grain dryers, designing bio-reactors for tissue engineering, and designing a low-cost prosthetic foot. During his year of graduate study in Molecular Biology, Mr. Chidiac worked on naturally occurring biomolecules and their effects on cancer cell lines. Most recently, he completed a graduate degree in Horticulture after specializing in controlled environment agriculture and hydroponic technology. The research for this degree included cultivar and fertilizer trials in addition to developing a novel hydroponic system for the production of greenhouse lettuce. Currently, he is employed by CC Grow in Denver, Colorado, and engages in horticultural consulting as well as cultivation and micropropagation of food crops and cannabis in controlled environments. "My mission is to help advance the field of Controlled Environment Agriculture for the sake of productivity, human health, and sustainability. I have a solid background in research, problem-solving, engineering design, quality control, and system optimization, and I have experience in leadership, teaching, and outreach. My other interests include progress in medical devices and technology as well as the discovery of novel medicinal biomolecules and their functional pathways."
