Purpose. Inspired by the REFUGE proposal: compare uniform and refuge-preserving mowing of orchard alleys, with one connected refuge occupying approximately 20% of the treatment section. The proposal specifies three matched pairs at one site. This demo illustrates one configurable section, without generating experimental evidence.
Geometry. The synthetic alley is 6 × 24 m. The connected refuge is a capsule; its specified area includes the internal buffer. Robot and mower dimensions are illustrative, rather than a measured model of the project platform. Cells sampled on a regular grid estimate areas swept by the guarded deck and wheels. The grid, route and kinematics simplify actual field conditions.
Audit. “Refuge undisturbed” means sampled refuge area not intersected by the simulated wheels or mower. “Managed area mown” is deck coverage of planned managed area. The reference refuge is retained for the uniform-treatment audit so that both treatments can be compared. Actual managed areas therefore differ between treatments; inspect the total mown area as well.
Targets. ≥95% undisturbed refuge and ≥90% planned managed area mown are investigator-set feasibility thresholds in the proposal, not biologically validated limits. The simulation is not evidence that these thresholds will be met in the field.
Positioning and time. Error settings apply a repeatable synthetic lateral deviation; they do not describe a calibrated sensor or prove autonomous performance. Travel time uses a nominal 0.45 m/s and excludes setup, interventions, acceleration and field delays. No efficiency gain is assumed.
Ecology. Grass and flowers are illustrative. Their appearance is not a survey or species prediction. Retained vegetation is a habitat proxy, not evidence of increased arthropod abundance, survival, pest control or yield.
